With an unprecedented freedom of movement in the history of the Spanish prison system, ‘Muros’ delves into four Spanish prisons to show us a reality that no one asks about and that everyone assumes. A reality that, until now, has remained isolated from the world. The documentary series, created and directed by David Miralles, reveals to us, with privileged access, ten stories that intertwine with many others to form a never-before-seen portrait of life in prison.

From left to right and top to bottom, Eugenio, Feli, Isidoro, Bárbara, Diego, Cata, Medhi, Culopato, and Mari.

The protagonists and their stories

CATA
“I think that if I hadn’t made the mistake of leaving home, of joining the FARC, none of what happened to my boys would have happened. My mom always tells me: ‘It’s not your fault, the fault lies with those bastards who killed them.’ I think that’s what has tormented me and I believe it kept leading me down the wrong path”.

MEDHI
“I look at a map and I know every country. My dream was to see the world, I’ve never wanted to be in one country until I die. When you value freedom is when a door is shut in your face. That’s when you realize the worth of freedom”.

BÁRBARA
“There are five of my family members here: my mother’s two sisters and two of my cousins. I know I’m going to come back. Besides having more charges, I know I’m not going to stop stealing. So, in my mind, I know I’m coming back. When? I don’t know, but I know I’m coming back”.

CULOPATO
“Here, the yard is like the square in my neighborhood. Just because I’ve been here for 5 years doesn’t mean I’ve changed. I’m still the same as always”.

DIEGO
“In life, we all have a destiny. And if you cause a lot of harm, you’re going to have to pay for it somehow. I paid for it in three ways: I ended up with no one, I’m in prison, and I have a disease”.

ISIDORO
“It’s hard for me to think about everything I’ve done to get money. The last years of my life have been basically that. Being aware that I was going to end up in prison. And there comes a point where you just don’t care anymore”.

FELI
“I’m a mother, and anyone who is a mother, imagine suddenly being separated from your children. Yes, okay, I committed a crime. But I committed it ten years ago”.

YAGO
“I grew up with my mother because my father was far away. I also grew up with some troubled kids when we were young. We would steal a car, go for a ride, and then leave it abandoned. We did it as a kind of entertainment. Some kids go play soccer, others go skating, well, we stole cars to pass the time”.

MARI
“I’m hooked because of my husband, and I’m here because of my husband. My husband put my head in the toilet in front of my children. So, everything that’s happening to me, I don’t blame myself, I blame him. Because I wouldn’t be here, I would be at home”.

EUGENIO
“I go out on the street, get into trouble, come back in, and each time with more years. Because the next time I come in, it might be the end for me. I don’t want to die in here, no way. I’d rather die alone on the street, even if it’s like that, than in here. It’s very sad in here. Unfortunately, I’ve already seen quite a few things”.

‘Muros’, is a production by Buendía Estudios in collaboration with Movistar Plus+. It consists of four episodes and all of them are available to watch on the platform.
